miles of art, nerdcon: stories, and other things

there are so many things are going on, so this is going to be super random?

miles of art in shawano county is coming up on saturday and sunday, and i’m severely freaking out.  if y’all would like to come and see me and my art, i’m going to be at woodland studio in downtown shawano–probably sewing eyes on little plush friends.

so–that’s not creepy at all.

and, if miles of art isn’t enough, i have nerdcon:  stories the next weekend in minneapolis.  (hence, the sewing of eyes on little plush friends.)  i have my exclusive nerdcon art piece (and related swag) done and ready, and it’s going to be my little plague doctor.

the plague doctor has also become a painting that will be available to purchase too.  (assuming that no one buys him this weekend?)

but, because i realize that miles of art and nerdcon are not in everyone’s neighborhood who might want some plague doctor swag, i’ve uploaded two versions of the plague doctor to my redbubble until the end of october as a limited edition–thingie.

related to all of this, i’m waiting for a new print shipment.  special, new prints that have never before been prints for nerdcon and, possibly, miles of art.  (yep, i’m gonna have bits and bobs to buy.  DEMOCRATIZE ART THROUGH BUTTONS.)

(i’m totally not the only person who thinks like this.  jessica joslin, a mixed media artist from chicago who utilizes taxidermy in her work, is part of a vending machine-based button show in chicago right now.  bless.)

i’m also working on pieces for the artgarage’s quirky show.  (i haven’t been accepted yet, but these were pieces that i wanted to work on anyway, so we do the work and worry about being accepted later.)

i’m still trying to decide if i’m going to apply for the artgarage’s holiday shop.  i probably should.  (i need to ask when the application fee is due.)

i purchased a new/another stylus.  the 53 pencil, which i really like the shape and feel and slide of the thing, but i also think the firmware hasn’t been updated to reflect the newest iOS updates, so it’s not quite working the way that it should in procreate yet.

i’ve also been asked to design a shingle for a lamp shop and to potentially consign work with them.  this is exciting, yeah?

so, that’s the completely disconnected update.  i’m not sure it’s much of one, but  in the meantime, feel free to check out tentacle-made studios (and me, ‘trie) in our various and sundry social media, internet homes:

okay!  time for more work!

courage.

re: the pop! show, studio spaces, and residencies

so–i may have, on the downlow, made a vidlet of the opening for those of you who couldn’t be there.

and, because, i just didn’t manage to do much liveblogging of the event because–omg–i had managed to block out what openings (even tiny openings like this one) are like–especially when you’re much smaller than everyone else around you.

where did november go?

*NB:  the featured image is a wallpaper that’s over on my flickr, but y’all can also get the abject little tree over on my redbubble on some posh swag.

okay, i seriously do not know how i didn’t post anything over here throughout the entire duration of november.

i mean, there was nanowrimo, which i failed at.

there was epic work, which, seriously, try making two videos a week minimally on top of writing and editing a ton of other articles and doing the social media and see how well you stay on top of things.  we also did this thing where we have new editors, and i have writers that report to me, but that really started in october?

there’s also that i’m preparing for a pop culture show in january?

i dunno.  i’ve no good explanation.

but, i have been drawing lovely things?

and, because what’s more fun than watching me unbox things and muck about in my studios?  videos.

okay, i’m off to do more work because there’s always more work to do, and tomorrow, i’m going to madison to go to the museum of contemporary art for the opening of Narayan Mahon’s show.

because i’m covering it for The Rainbow Hub.

i’m press for an art event.

*INCOHERENT SCREAMING*

okay.  courage.

wow, too long.

so, yeah, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long.  sorry.  THINGS.

photo 2 (1)

okay, for those of you that don’t speak squid, the last couple-three weeks were spent in a combination of cleaning out my studio at the ARTgarage (for reasons), writing like 4-5 articles a week plus doing the video review things, recording projecTransparency vids, co-hosting my first ever podcast, and fighting up the steep learning curve that is ALL THINGS ADOBE.

and patreon.  have i mentioned i have a patreon?

catching up: illinois trip, projecTransparency, and–other things

my trip to illinois totally wiped me out, and i came back sick and sunburnt and behind on a million and four things.

so–that was fun.

i have not finished the special video that i am touting about in the vids; it will be completed soon.  <–it’s at least started now, which is more than i can say at the time of filming.

i am also bungling about in adobe premiere for video editing because movie maker makes me angry and my mac is old so no imovie, and i’m not importing all the video onto my ipad just to edit it in imovie.

I AM AN ADULT; I WILL LEARN ACTUAL PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS.

or, at least, poke at them and swear creatively.  *hands*

i’m also thinking that this week i might projecTransparency about influential-for-me artists since they’re not necessarily the same as my favorite artists?  <–this directly relates to the projecTransparency supplimental down at the bottom of the post.

opinions?  is that something that’s interesting?

remember, definitely depere is next friday–july 18th!–and i’ll be at great harvest bread company in depere, wi, which i think is funny because i keep getting places that are severely bread-heavy and i have a gluten-intolerance.

(re:  it’s not funny.)

but, chief bread-head brent was super-cool, and yeah, i think i’ll like it there for the july and september definitely deperes.

i will also be premiering one of my redbubble shirts because OMG IT’S SO COOL.

and, related (because art) but not connected to definitely depere–can i write “definitely depere” a few more times?–i am leaving my studio at the ARTgarage.

that doesn’t mean that i won’t be teaching for them or participating in gallery nite or participating in shows or just generally showing there anymore, because i will; it just means that i’m not going to have a studio there anymore.  there are many, many reasons why this is happening–first and foremost, that i just don’t get in as often as i’d like–but a lot of it has to do with the ARTgarage and its board not fulfilling (or taking more steps) to fulfill its mission.

i also think that i’ve largely outgrown them, and that there are other, better venues for me to focus my time–like entering shows and making prints to sell on etsy and, potentially, conventions–on than at a place whose patronage comes from people who thing thomas kinkade and pretty pictures of ducks are the epitome of art.

which sounds incredibly elitist of me–and probably is.  there’s nothing wrong with this, but it’s not what i do, and being at the ARTgarage isn’t doing anything that i need it to do for me. (which also sounds selfish.)

ffs, WE’RE JUST NOT COMPATIBLE AT THE MOMENT.  that sounds nicer, yeah?

*HANDS*

and, i’m busy like whoa with The Rainbow Hub, so there’s that too.

i’ve also started a Patreon for those of you who might like to donate to the cause of keeping tentacle-made studios up and running.  <–i do not currently have the goals and perks up yet; they will appear soon.

please excuse the particular ridiculousness of this video.  like i said earlier, i’m learning adobe premiere, and it apparently doesn’t like videos of different sizes.  (and, i have figured out how to fix that yet.)

*hands*

artists mentioned:

*tentacle-made studios and projecTransparency’s Patreon

*remember that shirts and things are available over on tentacle-made studios’ redbubble.

*and, that tentacle-made studios has commission page!

tentacle-made studios everywhere:

and, in case y’all are really curious about what i write for The Rainbow Hub, y’all should check out my tag there.

okay.  i’m done blathering at y’all.

courage.

It’s Gallery Nite! And, I still need prompts.

So, yeah, I’m demo-ing digital painting/digital art tonight at Gallery Nite–I’ll be at the ARTgarage–and I STILL NEED PROMPTS.

*sighs*

Y’all are really letting me down, right now.  I’ve had two–TWO!–prompts, and they were both jellyfish.

We gotta do better on our communication, y’all.

All the information in the video because I’m mean, and because, two weeks in a row my Community Calendar has still be relevant.

I may get a handle of this yet.

Also, I did a lot of talking about my new series:  Paper Towns (Yes, like the John Green novel.) and Midas’ Touch (working title).

But, yeah, I’m going to do the prompts combined with the reduced palette color meme so–extra difficulty!

Did I mention that there’ll be a monitor so that everyone can watch me flounder?  Fun for the whole family!

And, I’ll have an array of nifty things that y’all can buy from me if that is a thing that you desire.

*pokes at capitalism*

Sketch-a-day is still progressing apace.

projecTransparency 1.13: (re: inspiration)

a continuation of the inspiration conversation in which i babble about Gallery Nite, ‘Lain, my new series…es, and just general squee.

hush, squee happens on occasion.

*and, that tentacle-made studios has commission page!

tentacle-made studios everywhere:

and, in case y’all are really curious about what i write for The Rainbow Hub, y’all should check out my tag there.

I may have also bought a craptastic video camera that’ll be coming in the mail soon.

*whistles*

Okay, I gotta go do the thing where I post The Rainbow Hub’s social media and get my junk together for Gallery Nite.

See y’all there.

Courage.

busy-ness, definitely depere, and projecTransparency installments

Because I keep forgetting to post them here.

I swear, I’m only, like, eight in.  They’re new!  I’m not used to it yet!

So, I just fail at the entire thing.

I need a minion.

*hard segue*

But, the sketch-a-day project is continuing apace.  (It’s potentially more fun to see them on my Instagram.  Contextualization, ya know?)

I’ve gotten really into Vyacheslav Mishchenko’s photographs of snails because–OMG!–they’re like tiny little fairytales.

With snails.

I really like snails.

But, I’ve also gotten really into Steve Axford’s photographs of mushrooms.

I really like mushrooms too.

*HANDS*

But, combine those, and we end up with the last, like, week of my sketch-a-day project:

So, there are more, but these are the ones that I’ve uploaded to my Flickr; although, they all are uploaded to my Instagram because, well, Instagram.

Thing High Atop The Thing, when did this all happen?

On a related-not-related note, these are how pretty the postcard-prints came out:

Aren’t they nice?  And, waterless printing!

I also picked up a sticker-making machine so–STICKERS!

They’re kinda craptastic?  Because the tops aren’t sealed but, still, stickers.

I CAN MAKE STICKERS ANY TIME I WANT TO!

The POWER!

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Idek.  But, I like that I can make stickers of my drawings/illustrations and digital paintings.

I can also (re:  still) make buttons.

Which, also, tickles me.  And, yes, I did, in fact, design and make Winter Soldier and Captain America buttons and stickers.

I may or may not (re:  may, definitely, absolutely may) have a Marvel-problem.

And, further corollary to everything, the first Definitely DePere was last week and was–okay?  May’s always really slow, and this one was no different.  But!  There are three more:

  • June 13th
  • July 18th
  • September 12th

All of them are from 5-8, and there’s a list of places that participate.  For June, I’ll be at Polito’s Pizza again–which they have really good pizza (I thew gluten-caution aside and had my first real piece of pizza in a longtime, and it was good.)–but July and September I’ll be at Great Harvest Bread Co.

I still don’t understand why any of us are in restaurants; I don’t make the decisions.  *hands*

There’s also a Meet the Artist/New Quarter Opening at the ARTgarage coming up on May 22nd so–yay?  I’m supposed to demo, so I have to sort something out for it.

I’m–also going to be putting up a commissions page/information soon?  (And, a PayPal button for donations or whatever.  And, theoretically, adding things to my Etsy so it’s–has things in it.  Again.)

*THIS IS THE SOUND MY ANXIETY MAKES*

So, yeah.

Now, have the most recent projecTransparency videos (with increasingly more refined production value!):

Okay, y’all, I’m gonna go do other things (like sleep, jfc, I’m tired).

Remember that I have all sorts of articles being published over at The Rainbow Hub (and while y’all are there, you should read everything else because we have some incredibly talented, dedicated writers), if that’s something that y’all are interested in.

Courage.

projecTransparency and results of the postcard printing

So, I asked y’all for your suggestions about what I should print for the upcoming Definitely DePere–which, by-the-by, I’m going to be at Polito’s Pizza on May 9th if y’all wanna come see me–and here were the final decisions.

If your faves didn’t make the cut this time, DO NOT DESPAIR!  They’ll be in the next batch.  I swear.

And, because–omg–busy week was busy, here’s my new display at the ARTgarage:

left to right: abacus-map, gilt hive, and Medusa

And, projecTransparency videos because I have been doing them!  I just got behind last week (in a fit of the anxieties about ordering prints, actually), so didn’t do a dedicated blog post.

Also, Eurovision reviewing for The Rainbow Hub.

Yes, this is a thing I do now.

VIDEOS!

Last week’s:

This week’s:

Okay, y’all.  I HAVE ALL THE THINGS TO DO.

Stay safe out there.

Courage.
